Our Religious Education is an afterschool and evening program for Public School children of registered families to receive the mandated eight years of Religious Education.
The program currently has 1400 children, grades one through high school from about 10 South Shore public schools. These children come once a week for Religious Instruction. We also provide specialized instruction for Special Needs children.
Over ninety volunteer catechists, (mainly parents) teach the children. Parents assist in the office, halls and substitute teaching. We also have high school students from the TCM (Teaching the Christian Message) programs at Monsignor Farrell and Moore Catholic High Schools. High school students from Tottenville, St. John Villa, St. Joseph by the Sea, and St. Joseph Hill also assist in the classroom and in the office.
Under the direction of the Moderator and Pastor, Rev. Robert W. Dillon, the Religious Education office is run by long time parishioner Mrs. Elizabeth Brim, the Director of Religious Education, who is certified by the Archdiocese of New York and has a MA in Religious Studies from the Institute of Religious Studies at St. Joseph's Seminary Yonkers. Mrs. Brim is also an adjunct professor at St. John's University, and a teacher of Catechist Formation classes.
The other members of the Religious Ed staff are: Mrs. Nancy Gallo, Coordinator of Religious Education, Mr. Gregory M. Hauck, Coordinator of Religious Education and Mrs. AnnaMarie Manacle, First Holy Communion Coordinator.
